Rift widens : Nepal, Oli want Khanal out
KATHMANDU, APR 20 -
Over four dozen Central Committee (CC) leaders including senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal and KP Sharma Oli have put the pressure on prime minister to step down and pave the way for the formation of a national consensus government.
Leaders gathered at Oli’s residence in Balkot agreed to press the prime minister to resign at the party’s CC meeting scheduled on April 27. The leaders loyal to Nepal-Oli faction said PM has no alternative but to resign “for the sake of statute and peace”. “He was assigned to implement the party’s decision and complete the peace and statute writing processes on a consensus basis but he is failing his mandate. Now, he should quit,” UML CC member Karna Bahadur Thapa said.
Oli, Nepal believe the Khanal government will not be able to take the remaining peace process on the right track.
The Nepal-Oli faction has decided to form a national consensus government under the leadership of any party in whose name consensus is forged. “If consensus is formed in the name of Maoist leader Baburam Bhattarai, we can support him. If not, KP Oli will be forwarded as a consensus candidate,” said a UML leader. UML moderate leader Pradeep Gywali and some Khanal’s men including general secretary Ishwor Pokharel have hopped into the Nepal-Oli camp in recent days.
Nepal and Oli are advocating to form a new government before the May 28 deadline for completing the statute writing process expires. Those close to Khanal said he will not resign just because of “threat from the Nepal-Oli camp”. “They have no strength to oust him. Khanal was elected prime minister despite their strong objection and will go ahead without obstruction,” said a PM’s advisor.
